PROUD ACHIEVEMENT AT THE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP FROM ALKU FACULTY OF SPORTS SCIENCES STUDENTS
At the European Athletics Championships held in Birmingham, England, between August 10 and 16, 2026, Esra Türkmen, a graduate of Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University (ALKU) Faculty of Sports Sciences, and our student Salih Korkmaz achieved significant successes.
National athlete Esra Türkmen, a graduate of our faculty, successfully completed the championship by finishing sixth in Europe with a throw of 59.29 meters on her third attempt in the women's javelin throw final.
At the same time, our student and national athlete Salih Korkmaz became the new holder of the Turkish record in the half marathon walk with a time of 1:24:45. Korkmaz secured fifth place in Europe with his impressive performance.
Europe's Best Competed in Birmingham
The 2026 European Athletics Championships, one of Europe's most important athletics events, took place at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham, England, between August 10 and 16, 2026. The championship also held historical significance as it marked the first time the European Athletics Championships were hosted in the United Kingdom.
Within the scope of the championship, road races were held alongside track and field events. The half marathon walk competitions took place on the streets of Birmingham on Saturday, August 15, with the races finishing at Victoria Square in the city center.
As the ALKU Faculty of Sports Sciences, we congratulate Esra Türkmen and Salih Korkmaz, who successfully represented our country at the European Championship, and wish them continued success.
